Plymouth City Council’s ‘Stepping Stones to Nature’ initiative asked for our help to encourage play and recreation at four wooded sites – Forder Valley, Woodland Wood, Efford Valley and Southway Valley. Working with local schools & community groups we developed designs for the different sites, incorporating playable picnic areas, structures for climbing in among the trees and building dens, bridges across streams, and of course stepping stones to get kids down and into the water. For some of the build we were assisted by local kids, who enjoyed digging holes, carving sculptures and building a log tangle. The aim was to break down barriers to the natural world: playfully drawing people into the valleys and encouraging them to have fun when they get there.
